Layout Considerations for Storage Racking

| Blog | May 9, 2011

Pallet Racking for the Small-to-Medium Sized Shop

OK, so you signed the lease and now want to make the best of your investment in space. What should you do?

Well first ask yourself a few questions about your business.

What is it you need to store?

How heavy are the items (SKU’s). Do they come to you on a pallet, what are the dimensions of a pallet, how much does a pallet weigh? How many pallets need to be stored? What kind of truck delivers the pallets? What kind of vehicles arrive to pick up orders? What does a typical order look like – a partial pallet, multiple pallets?

Even if your inventory is not palleted, you will likely still want to use the vertical space you have signed up for. So a lighter duty shelving might be a good option.

The Supplier Conversation

When you begin to make vendor inquiries they will be asking for answers to some of the questions above. Plus, they will want to know the layout of your floor space. It can be useful to take a stab at planning your shelving or racking layout on your own first. It is amazing what kinds of ideas can come out of a little doodling with pencil and paper. Where are the doors, fire escapes, windows, lunch room, sales offices, computer connections? Do you have room for a forklift? How wide are the aisles?  How high can we go? Perhaps a second-story space or mezzanine would be useful to consider. Do local building codes and fire codes constrain our ideas?

Over the long term, it can be very powerful to at least take a stab at measuring your space utilization. By calculating the cost per cubic foot or meter of your space and using it to monitor space costs over time you will be reminded to re-evaluate your use of space as you business changes and seek out ways to improve.

If you would like CMI to visit your site and provide assistance in making your storage space serve you, please call or email us. We can provide drawings and work with municipal bodies and engineering firms to obtain permits.

Pallet Racking Manufacturer Styles

Pallet Racking Manufacturer Styles

Over the past few decades, pallet racking manufacturers have continued to introduce innovations to improve the utility, durability and cost-effectiveness of warehouse storage systems. While this has been good for new racking projects it has created a maintenance challenge particularly for small warehouse owners and operators. Replacing damaged uprights (frames) or beams or reconfiguring existing pallet rack systems can be frustrating if you can’t identify the rack systems to start with. When searching the web, I have found that there are lots of sites that provide a subset of photographs of some rack styles but I have yet to find a a more comprehensive view than this basic image. To be honest, I really don’t know the source of this image and would be glad to reference the author if they let me know.

I welcome your pictures of racking and shelving styles that you have and will organize and post them on my Blog to attempt to provide a single resource for all.

Increasing Efficiency With Inexpensive Warehouse Supplies

| Blog | March 11, 2011

Practical Productivity Ideas

Among the thousands of products available, sometimes there is just one inexpensive item that can increase productivity in your business far beyond its modest cost.

One of these warehouse supplies is a packaging bench workstation. So often, packaging materials such as tape, rolls of paper, boxes, labels and everything else needed for packaging goods is kept in on shelves in an organized, but haphazard manner. They are taken off of the shelves as needed, used and then replaced on the shelf when finished with. It is a time-wasting and inefficient process.

With a packaging bench workstation, everything is always at your fingertips. Ergonomically designed, these workstations hold all of your packaging supplies in one convenient location. They even include lights and multiple storage niches, so you can keep their ample work table space free for the job at hand.

The handling of waste in the workplace is always a problem. Between the small items of litter in the office and the large amounts of recyclables on the warehouse floor, you need dozens of trash receptacles. These will range in size from compact under bench containers to the large trash bins the waste disposal company picks up outside. A good warehouse supplies company will have all of these in supply, plus accessories that make handling and disposing of waste an efficient process.

By the time all the small trash containers reach the big plastic trash cans inside the warehouse, these containers become heavy and cumbersome. Manually emptying them can become dangerous and a forklift attachment can be more expensive than you may need. You can buy a universal trash can dumper from a good warehouse supplies company that will take care of your waste disposal problems cheaply and efficiently.

Most warehouses and manufacturers store often needed goods out of reach of workers on the floor. The only two options available for reaching these goods are ladders and personnel lifts. If you have a forklift, you can get a personnel lift accessory, but these are not always appropriate. Traditional step ladders can be very dangerous and often require two workers to use safely.

An inexpensive and safe alternative to standard ladders is a safety ladder or rolling ladder. These lightweight warehouse supplies come with casters to make it easy for one worker to move around the warehouse. Once in place, they give him a safe climbing angle with hand rails and a platform to stand on for handling goods at height.

Even simple tasks like picking small orders can be made more time efficient and less labor intensive using an inexpensive stock cart or dolly. There are many configurations to choose from – with features such as a built in ladder, a bin for pick slips and packing tape, adjustable shelves and different types of casters to accommodate different floor conditions.

These are just a few of the inexpensive warehouse supplies that can make all the difference to safety and efficiency in your workplace. Stay tuned for more practical ideas for your storage space. If you are seeking pre-owned solutions watch for updates on our recent purchases. We can save you some dollars!
